Have you ever stopped and thought about how the principles of exercise and fitness can also be applied to business? It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately and I wanted to share my thoughts with you all.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Laura Torbet from The Lunae Collective back in Episode 56, where we talked all about cycles and how they relate to movement and exercise.
I’ve been a member of Laura’s workout membership for quite some time now and one of the things I love is at the beginning of all her videos, she always gives us a quick rundown of our physiology and hormones in the phase we’re in and why the workout we’re about to do is best suited to that phase.
I’ve learned a lot from Laura about how exercise and fitness relates to cycles and I wanted to share some of the analogies I’ve picked up over the last couple of years that can also be applied to business.
You don’t get fit from one workout
We all know that you don’t get fit from one single workout, it takes time and consistency to build up your strength and fitness. Well, it’s the same with business. A lot of internet gurus would have us believe we can build a multi-six figure business almost overnight, but it’s not that easy. You don’t get business success from one event - it takes time and consistency to build up your business.
Exercise is where you break down muscle, rest is where it builds back stronger
When we exercise, we’re breaking down our muscles, but it’s the rest and the periods in between our workouts where we make the gains and our bodies build back stronger and fitter. Just like in business, if you don’t allow time for rest, you won’t make the gains you need to take your business to the next level.
Follicular and Ovulation Phases
In these phases, we have higher energy and it’s a great opportunity to focus on growth and getting things done. It’s a great opportunity to power through your to-do list and move your business forward.
Luteal and Menstrual Phases
Conversely, in these phases, take your foot off the gas and focus on sustaining what you’ve already built. It’s time to slow down and rest, allowing all of the things you’ve been building to settle in and do their thing.
To improve your fitness and grow your business, you need to stretch outside your comfort zone
This is a common theme with both exercise and business. If you want to improve your fitness and grow your business, you need to stretch outside of your comfort zone. You can’t just keep doing the same things over and over - you need to look for ways to grow and reach new audiences. You need to do something that’s slightly outside of your comfort zone - something that’s slightly uncomfortable and something you haven’t done before.
It’s been amazing to look back on my business journey and see how I’ve grown and stretched my comfort zone. What felt comfortable and easy for me two years ago is now a tiny little part of what I do every day, every week, every month in my business.
If you’ve been feeling a little bit stagnant, maybe look for ways to stretch your comfort zone - just a little.
For me, that recently looked like joining TikTok! It’s been really refreshing to see that it’s its own little microcosm and I’ve been really enjoying it.
